Every fall the new iPhone model is launched and this fall is no exception. There are still a few months till the 2022 iPhone 14 models will be launched, but the rumours about the changes and upgrades to the phone started going around long back. The iPhone 14 could have the biggest changes in years and thus the excitement for the launch of the same can be felt around. Apple is rumored to be bringing a significant change to the “iPhone 14” lineup . The gap between standard and pro models will be widened. Apple is eliminating the 5.4-inch iPhone mini and is planning to focus on larger iPhone sizes for its flagship devices. Four new iPhones in 6.1 and 6.7-inch sizes are expected. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will be the standard, more affordable variants, while the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will be higher-end “Pro” editions.

Here is what we know about the much-anticipated iPhone 14 series — though this far from launch we’d be extra skeptical, as there’s plenty of time for things to change.

iPhone 14 Max replacing iPhone 14 mini

Despite the poor sales performance of the iPhone 12 mini, Apple introduced an iPhone 13 mini alongside the other iPhone 13 models last fall. However, the mini variant is now killed, as Apple is said to be shaking up its iPhone 14 lineup for 2022. Along with the ordinary 6.1-inch iPhone 14, a larger iPhone 14 Plus or Max could be released. So there would be two regular-sized phones and two iPhone 14 variants with larger screens.

Design

No Notch and New Face ID Hardware Design (Pro Only)

The “iPhone 14” rumours have mostly revolved around the pro variants, the “iPhone 14 Pro” and “iPhone 14 Pro Max,” thus far. This could be due to the fact that Apple appears to be adopting a different approach to improvements in 2022.

The notch is rumoured to be gone in favour of a pill-and-hole cutout, a 48MP camera, and the faster A16 chipset in the pro models.

The regular models, on the other hand, may not differ significantly from the current iPhone 13.

Screen Size

Camera

Apple is expected to keep the “iPhone 14” with a dual-camera setup. A 12MP wide lens and a 12MP ultra-wide lens.

Apple’s pro iPhones have been rumoured to have 48MP wide cameras for some time. This improvement would result in a big upgrade in photographic skills, but it will only be available on the expensive variants. As a result, regular models should keep their 12MP cameras.

Another improvement to the selfie camera could be implemented. Apple might switch to a 12MP ultra-wide lens, giving the iPhone Center Stage feature.

Apple could update the selfie camera with a larger aperture of f/1.9, up from f/2.2, according to a rumour from late April 2022.

Face ID

Apple will keep using the Face ID feature that was introduced with the iPhone 13. The standard “iPhone 14” models will have a notch to house the components. Apple has also introduced a new Face ID function that works with masks, reducing the need for both biometrics. When enabled, Face ID can now scan the area around a person’s eyes to verify their identity.

Pricing

The iPhone 14 is expected to be priced similarly to the iPhone 13, which starts at $799 for the standard iPhone 13 and $999 for the iPhone 13 Pro. However, as there may be no iPhone 14 small, a larger 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max is expected to cost $899.

The iPhone 14 Pro could cost $999 and the iPhone 14 Pro Max could cost $1,099 or more.

iPhone 14 keeps the Lightning port

Unfortunately, the iPhone 14 is likely to join the litany of Apple gadgets that were expected to switch to USB-C but instead continue with Lightning. Leaked Information ApplePro says that the iPhone 14 Pro models will not contain USB-C, instead opting for an enhanced version of Lightning with USB 3.0-like data transfer capabilities.

iPhone 14 features and specs

Improved battery life

According to a rumour from Taiwan’s Economic Daily News, Apple’s 2022 iPhone could have a longer battery life (via MacRumors). This is reported to be owing to a new 5G chip that could potentially give Wi-Fi 6E connectivity to the upcoming iPhone.

Adoption of Wi-Fi 6E

According to a November note from Kuo, the iPhone 14 could be equipped with Wi-Fi 6E. The components required for Wi-Fi 6E, however, may be in short supply, according to the expert. Wi-Fi 6E is also claimed to be included in Apple’s anticipated VR gear.

Satellite communication

According to Bloomberg, an 11th-hour iPhone 13 rumour that didn’t pan out was the addition of satellite connectivity, which would allow users to send text messages through satellite in locations without cellular coverage, at least in emergency scenarios. Unfortunately, satellite connectivity is not included in the iPhone 13 lineup; however, this could indicate that it will be included in the iPhone 14.

A16 chip

According to prior rumours, the entire iPhone 14 series would be upgraded to an A16 chip, which would be an improvement over the A15 chip used in the previous iPhone. However, in March, Kuo anticipated that the A16 would only be found in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, with the 14 and 14 Max remaining unchanged with A15.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro

Based on all of the current rumours, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max appear to be in a league of their own. We say that because telephoto zooms will once again be limited to the Pros. But also because the upcoming iPhone 14 Pros are expected to include in-display Touch ID, removing the notch in favour of a punch hole display.

Furthermore, the iPhone 14 Pro models are likely to have a 48MP main camera, which is higher than the 12MP camera expected on the standard iPhone 14.

The iPhone 14 Pro is expected to be driven by the A16 Bionic chip, while the iPhone 14 is expected to be powered by the year-old A15 Bionic chip.

Analyst Jeff Pu predicts that this time around, Apple will deliver all four iPhone 14 versions a 120Hz display and all four will have 6GB of RAM.
